\chapter{Foreword}

This document is a course companion for the IGCSE History (0470): Option~B (the 20th Century): World War One depth study unit. This is designed for first examinations in 2024. More syllabus information is available at \myurl{https://www.cambridgeinternational.org/programmes-and-qualifications/cambridge-igcse-history-0470/}.

We were looking for comprehensive review materials, but found no exceptionally good ones.  They either only answer specific questions and lack a hollistic understanding of the entire war and how events link to each other in a broader sense, or they are too general and lack specific knowledge.  Here we are, in some sense over-ambitiously, attempting to unify all materials we have---but we are just random students so don't expect it to be really good either.  I just hope that it'll help some people and reading it won't be an entire waste of time.

This depth study unit does not cover the origin of conflict for World War One, it merely discusses the war itself.  That's what this document is aiming to discuss for now.  However, as I recognize that the events leading to the war are (1)~in the curriculum and (2)~beneficial to know about when discussing events during the war too, some references to the origin and aftermath of the conflict are also discussed, albeit in less detail than materials specifically designed for these materials.

This document is a work-in-progress and is wildly incomplete. Particularly, it is unclear which chapters should specific information belong; the current strategy is to include an excerpt of such information where relevant and use cross-references to the rest of the document in case more specific information is needed, but things are getting messey.

\chapter{The Parties Involved}

At this point, the Central Powers, particularly Germany, is contemplating attacking the Allies. On 1 August, 1914, Germany declared war on Russia. This was the beginning of the more significant part of World~War~One.

\chapter{Schlieffen Plan}

The Schlieffen Plan was Germany's quick plan to war, drafted by General von~Schlieffen. The plan involved using 6,000,000 men, which is 90\% of Germany's army (sometimes known as the ``right wing'', which Schlieffen said must be six times stronger than any other division to carry out the plan) to surround and capture Paris from the east and cause French surrender, all in six weeks, and then attack Russia. The attack was planned to go through Belgium, Luxembourg and Holland as the Germans would not have time to penetrate French fortifications and defenses on its Germany border.

\section{Reasons for the Schlieffen Plan}

Germany's geographical position put it in a difficult position if there was a war.  Opposing Germany in the Triple Entente were Russia and France on either side of Germany, meaning that Germany would have to fight on both sides of the country at the same time, which would divide German forces and make them weaker, rendering it unlikely that Germany would win the war.  Germany thought that it was likely that a war was coming and that it would end up in this position.  The Schlieffen Plan was developed because of this situation, which involved a quick victory over France in six weeks before Russia was ready to fight, and then turning on Russia.  Additionally, as the French have well-defended fortifications on its German border, the Schlieffen Plan planned to go through Belgium, Luxembourg and Holland to enter France.  The plan seemed to solve Germany's problem.

\section{Changes to the Schlieffen Plan}

Although the original Schlieffen Plan was written by von~Schlieffen, Schlieffen was retired by the point war broke out.

The new general, Moltke did not listen to Schlieffen's dying words of “keep the right flank strong”. Schlieffen urged that the right flank of the German army should be 6 times stronger than any other. Molke ignored his advice and reduced the number of soldiers in the plan by 100,000 and the additional troops were sent to the Eastern Front or to the south for the defense of the territory of Lorraine. The changes diluted the plan as there will be less soldiers fighting against the Allies on the Weatern Front in their main attack.

Moltke altered the route of the plan. In the initial Schlieffen plan, the German troops were planned to make a wide sweep through the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. However, Moltke modified the plan by ordering the soldiers to take a direct route through Belgium, causing all of his troops to face fierce resistance from Belgium, delaying the plan.  They were delayed by ten extra days at Liege and forces were diverted for two months at Antwerp.

The changes that Moltke made, in general, weakened the Schlieffen Plan.  However, they weren't very decisive---the Schlieffen Plan was likely to fail anyway because of other reasons (\vref{falure of the schlieffen plan}).  As with any single factor of failure, its impact on its own is limited.

\section{Failure of the Schlieffen Plan\label{sec:Failure-of-the-Plan}}

The success of the Schlieffen Plan depends on multiple factors, all assumed to be true by Schlieffen, but were over ambitious and did not reflect reality. The following major ``miscalculations'' and tactical failures disrupted the Schlieffen Plan and ultimately caused the plan to fail.

	\item [{Belgian resistance}] The Germans assumed that Belgium would not resist them sending their army through Belgium to reach France, or that Belgium would have weak and insignificant resistance.

		In reality, the Belgians resisted fiercely, particularly at the Siege of Liège and the Battle of Yser with heavy fortifications. The Siege of Liège was supposed to happen in 48 hours, but instead took 10 days. 125,000 soldiers were also diverted to take \fxnote*{Why is Antwerp an insignificant military target?  Discuss the reasons that may have led Germany to capture it anyway.}{Antwerp which was of insignificant military value} which lasted until 10 October. Belgians were also actively sabotaging German railway and communication lines with floods. All this also made the Germans more careful and they started to avoid taking heavy casualties, which further slows them down, giving France time to prepare, causing splits \fxnote*{Which German armies were split specifically because of Belgian actions?}{within German armies}, and \fxnote*{Arguably the UK joined the war \emph{because} Belgium resisted.}{potentially causing Britain to join the war}. 	\item [{Russia mobilizing fast}] The Germans calculated that Russia would take six weeks to mobilize and planned on using this time to capture France. However, Russia proved to be much quicker to mobilize and some significant armies reached the German border on 17 August. The Germans left no margin for error in its tightly packed and ambitious Schlieffen Plan with systematic errors listed above. Failure of any part could result in failure and possibly total defeat---in reality, almost all general assumptions of the plan were not met. Additionally, Germany's failure in multiple battles, especially the \textbf{First Battle of the Marne}, further delayed Germany and hindered the success of the plan.

\section{Importance of the Schlieffen Plan}
The following points describe the importance of the Schlieffen Plan, both that of the plan itself and the failure thereof.

\chapter{Belgian Resistance\label{belgian}}

\section{Background of Belgian Resistance}
The Treaty of London, signed 1839, guaranteed that the neutrality of Belgium would be respected by neighboring European powers. Germany (who was a signatory) violated this when they invaded Belgium on 3 August 1914 as part of the Schlieffen Plan.  Germany expected Belgium to let them through or have little defense.  They asked for free passage across Belgium which was refused and the Germans decided to fight across.  However, in reality Belgium refused permission for the Germany Army to pass through freely and defended fiercely.

\section{Process of Belgian Resistance}

The Belgian army was mobilized.  The Germans expected to go through the entirety of Belgium in two full days, but in fact the fighting to take the small fortified town of Li\`ge alone took twelve days, slowing down the Schlieffen Plan drastically and was a major contributor to its failure.  Railway lines and bridges were demolished to slow down the Germans.  The defense at Antwerp against a small but significant portion of the German army took two months, but acted as an important diversionary force diverting Germany's attention from the rest of the Schlieffen Plan.  The resistance also created time for the BEF to land in France and reach Mons (\vref{mons}).

The German behavior in Belgium and the death of 6000 civilians, which was used as evidence of Germans being inhumane in British and French propaganda, contributed to a lack of neutral support (importantly from countries like the US but that isn't a deciding factor for the US joining the allies) and disquiet amongst intellectuals within Germany.

\section{Importance of Belgian Resistance}
Belgian resistance won them many friends and sympathy from Allies which was an important reason for Britain to honor the Treaty of London and declare war on Germany.  Belgian resistance also drastically slowed the Germans down from the Schlieffen Plan by at least ten days, which bought the French, British and Russians time to mobilize, leading to the failure of the Schlieffen Plan.

It is true that there are many other events that are important to the entire war, such as the Battle of the Marne, Russian mobilization, new weapons, trench warfare, the war at sea (especially the British blockade), the Battle of the Marne and Verdun, US entry into the war.  However, it is hard to deny that Belgian resistance bought the allies precious time to mobilize especially for the decisive Battle of the Marne, without which Germany may be able to carry out the Schlieffen Plan to plan.

Although the US was officially neutral before its declaration of war in April 1917, it supplied Britain and other applies with money, food, raw materials, arms, and other supplies.

\section{American Forces on the Western Front}

The US President, Woodrow Wilson, put Major-General John Pershing in
command of the American Expeditionary Force (the AEF) sent to Europe. Few American soldiers had fought in any wars, and they were certainly not familiar with the sort of conditions they would find on the Western Front. Pershing therefore insisted that American forces were well trained before going to Europe and, later, many received further training once they arrived in France. The first American troops landed in France in June 1917 and by the end of the month, 14,000 American soldiers had arrived. Eleven months later, over 1 million American troops were stationed in France, arriving at the rate of 10,000 a day.

About half of the US soldiers stationed in France worked on developing the French transport system so that it could move vast numbers of men and supplies quickly and efficiently. For example, they:

• On 21 August 1918, over 108,000 US soldiers joined with the British
Third Army in the second battle of Albert. After 2 days, over 8000 German
soldiers had been captured.
• Pershing commanded the US First Army, consisting of more than 500,000
men, in the largest operation ever undertaken by American forces. Beginning on 12 September, they launched an attack on the salient created
by the Ludendorff Offensive. Within 4 days, the whole salient was under
Allied control. The Germans were forced to retreat.
• Between 26 September and 1 November, Pershing commanded more
than 1 million American and French soldiers. Using over 300 tanks and 500 American aircraft, the troops he commanded had advanced by 32 km towards the German border by 1 November 1918.
Although the American forces played a significant role in fighting and ensuring that supply lines worked effectively, perhaps the greatest impact the US forces

\section{Reasons for the Ludendorff Offensive}

The American Expeditionary Force (AEF) arrived in Europe in 1917 and rapidly increased its presence on the Western Front. By the spring of 1918, there were over one million American soldiers in Europe, and the German high command saw this as a significant threat to their war effort. Germany needed to win the war before the American troops could smash them.
	\item[British blockade]
The British naval blockade had a profound impact on the German war effort. By 1917, Germany was facing severe shortages of food, fuel, and other essential supplies, and morale among the German people was declining. The German military saw the Ludendorff Offensive as a way to break the British lines and end the war before Germany's resources were completely depleted.
	\item[Superior manpower]
After the collapse of Russia in 1917, the German army was able to transfer 500,000 soldiers from the Eastern Front to the Western Front. This gave them a significant advantage in manpower over the Allied forces for the first time in the entire war (on the Western front), allowing them to launch a coordinated attack along a wide front.
	\item[Political pressure]
By 1918, the German government and military leaders were under increasing pressure to end the war and secure a favorable peace settlement. \section{Operation Michael}

General Ludendorff launched his great and final offensive, Operation Michael, on 21 March 1918.

Ludendorff planned to break the stalemate on the Western Front by driving west through the weakest part of the French and British lines of trenches. Before dawn on 21 March, suddenly, 600 German guns began a powerful bombardment of enemy trenches that lasted for 5 hours. This was followed by the releasing of clouds of deadly mustard gas that suffocated the British soldiers in their trenches. Instead of following up the bombardment with waves of infantry, as was usual and which the British would be expecting, Ludendorff used a different strategy. Specially trained and lightly armed small bands of ``storm troopers'' advanced quickly along the whole front line. Luckily for them, they were hidden in a thick fog as they focused on breaking through gaps and weak defenses. Confused and disoriented, the British climbed out of their trenches, and retreated. Thousands surrendered or were taken prisoner of war.

Close to 100,000 German infantrymen followed the storm troopers and took control of the land gained, despite some fierce opposition from Allied forces. At first, this strategy was brilliantly successful. By July, German troops had advanced 65 km into France. They had crossed the River Somme and had reached the banks of the River Marne. Paris was within range of heavy gunfire.

For the second time in the war, it looked as though Paris would fall to the Germans. However, an important part was played by about 20,000 newly
arrived American soldiers. Fighting with the Allies, they helped to stop the German advance at the second battle of the Marne in July 1918.

British and French leaders decided to put all the Allied forces under the overall command of General Foch. A French general, his task was to make sure that all the Allied armies acted as a single force and not as separate units. Each national army kept its own commanders-in-chief, although they all worked under General Foch. At first, even though the Germans had been stopped at the Marne, it seemed that the combined Allied forces could do little to stop the German advance.
